Open Door CentreThe Open Door Centre, breaking down the stigma around Mental Health
Today I visited the Open Door Centre in Liscard, which is a fantastic outreach service for local young people with anxiety, depression, stress or low moods.
Lee Pennington set up the Open Door Centre about five and a half years ago, to reach out to the local community and provide mental health support along with music provision for young people. The centre offers free and immediate access to ‘Beating the Blues’ Computerised Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CCBT) in their unique warm, cosy drop-in centre, a real contrast to what some people might think is typical clinical mental health provision.
Local Labour councillors Tom Usher and Bernie Mooney have also been supporting the centre and they accompanied me to present the Open Door Centre with a certificate congratulating them on receiving the sum of £1,875.00 of “Your Wirral” funding from Wirral Borough Council.
Tom told me “The open door centre is a great service for local young people and as we know there is a lack of funding for mental health issues, if it wasn’t for the Open Door Centre Young People would have to wait months for an appointment.”
The Centre is a volunteer-driven organisation and members often go on to become mentors; this helps them to maintain contact with the centre, which is a vital part of the work they do. The Open Door Centre has a team of 20 mentors. The mentors have been instrumental in helping 650 people of all ages regain a healthy outlook on life. One of the key factors is immediate help for early intervention, which prevents more serious mental health issues in the future.
The Open Door Centre is carrying out vital work at the heart of our community in Liscard and really helps to blow apart the stigma and taboo in relation to mental health it was a pleasure to see the work that they do, the Centre works across the Wirral and has no boundaries as to who can access their support.
If you are currently worried about your mental health, Greg and Lee urge you to get in touch with them. You don’t have to deal with it alone. Just email firstname.lastname@example.org.
